CURB STRESS AND HEAL YOUR HEART
CARDIOLOGIST JOHN M. KENNEDY, M.D.
SHOWS HOW TO DO IT IN JUST 15 MINUTES A DAY
HIS BREATHE™ TECHNIQUE WORKS FOR EVERYONE
All of us have known or know about someone who had a massive heart attack, often
while being involved in a stressful situation. Yet we continue to race through life without
realizing that the stress we confront daily is increasing our own risk of meeting a similar
fate. In his new book THE 15-MINUTE HEART CURE, the distinguished cardiologist
John M. Kennedy, M.D. makes a powerful case for stress reduction as a key to fighting
heart disease and then shows us how to do it.
“After having worked with tens of thousands of patients, I am more convinced than ever
that learning how to deal with stress and minimize its effects on our bodies is as
important as diet, smoking cessation, and lowering cholesterol levels in minimizing the
potential of cardiovascular disease and events.”
Based on extensive research and filled with dozens of anecdotes, THE 15-MINUTE
HEART CURE takes readers through the science of how the heart works, highlights the
four major types of heart disease, and explains the deleterious affects of stress. The
“heart” of the book, though, is Kennedy’s innovative BREATHE™ technique that helps
people relax and requires only fifteen minutes a day to implement.
“Relaxation is really good for the heart,” Kennedy writes. “The relaxation response can
be elicited by deep, conscious, and focused breathing, which stimulates the nerves in
the cranium, calms and soothes the body, lowers the blood pressure, and protects the
heart.” Kennedy shows how the BREATHE™ technique can be adapted for a widerange
of situations—from general maintenance for coronary health to acute stress
attacks, from pre-surgical stress to rare cardiac events, and even as a tool for
companies to decrease stress in the workplace. The basic BREATHE™ exercise is
performed in seven simple steps:
- B is for Begin: In order to develop a rhythm and routine, Kennedy discusses
the importance of finding the right time of day and a comfortable, quiet place to
practice the meditation. He shows readers the proper technique for deep
breathing.
- R is for Relax: Though it may seem counterintuitive, relaxation requires focused
and conscious breathing. “Try to clear all thoughts and concentrate only on your
breath,” advises Kennedy.
- E is for Envision: Kennedy presents special imagery exercises and gives
specific healing metaphors to help lower heart rate, blood pressure, and
strengthen the immune system.
- A is for Apply: “When reading through the guided imagery exercises and
observing the accompanying art, imagine how the heart-healing images and
metaphors can be applied and relate to a healthy heart.” By practicing each
heart-healing metaphor regularly, they will be filed away in your memory bank,
and become retrievable and accessible for high-stress situations.
- T is for Treat: The BREATHE™ technique is a pleasurable and therapeutic
exercise. Practicing regularly, like exercising in the gym, will foster feelings of
elation and happiness.
- H is for Heal: The goal of this technique is to unite neural networks that connect
your heart and brain, decreasing blood pressure, enhancing immune response,
and lowering pulse rate.
- E is for End: Every effective exercise has a formal beginning and ending.
THE 15-MINUTE HEART CURE stresses the importance of completing this
exercise carefully and mindfully, noticing how the body feels afterwards.
Whether you have had a heart attack, have been diagnosed with a heart condition, or
simply want to keep your heart in great shape, THE 15-MINUTE HEART CURE gives
you the tools to make every day less stressful and more healthy. It is Dr. Kennedy’s gift
to everyone who wants to create a better life for themselves and their loved ones.
